The Vikings have made a habit of finding ways to respond in the face of adversity.

Marysville’s ability to bounce back was on display again Thursday after squandering a 2-0 lead and falling behind 3-2 to Port Huron Northern. The Vikings responded with nine straight runs on the way to an 11-4 victory over the Huskies.

“One of our goals every game is to answer back,” Marysville head coach Ryan Rathje said. “We started being more patient at the plate, and getting better at-bats. That was a big key for us to re-take the lead.”

Paige Ameel tallied two — including a double — and drove in two runs in the win. Jessica Wilson drove in a pair of runs, as did Hayley Delor. Hannah Delor scored two runs and Lydia Sawdon finished with a double and two runs scored.

Ameel earned the win from the circle, allowing two four runs — two earned — on 10 hits over seven innings of work. She struck out nine, despite pitching in a steady drizzle.

“It wasn’t the easiest of conditions, but Paige and (catcher) Lydia did a great job of getting ahead in the count,” Rathje said. “That, and our defense really helped out too.”

Game 2 of the supposed doubleheader was canceled due to weather.
