A year ago, the Pioneers advanced all the way to the Class C regional finals and with many familiar faces, Coach Falon Mullins hopes for the same success in 2014.

Key returners for Richard this season include; senior setter Katie Kalamerus, senior setter Jacqueline Reimeyer, senior outside hitter Alex Friedrich and senior outside hitter Monica Dziuba.

Rounding out the lineup are junior middle blockers Abbi Blackburn and Julia Sattler, junior defensive specialists Ava Daly and Anna Lewis and sophomore libero Maria Webb.

The Pioneers opened their season last weekend at the Carleton Airport tournament.

The team faced Brighton (18-25, 25-27), Monroe (15-25, 24-25), Pickney (25-20, 25-17) and Airport (15-25, 16-25).

Friedrich finished with 10 kills and 23 digs, Klamerus had 11 kills, 29 assists and 16 digs and Reimeyer had seven kills, 23 assists and 10 digs.

Dziuba finished with 20 kills and 16 digs and Webb recorded 14 digs.

Cabrini

A few injuries have put a damper on the Cabrini volleyball roster, but Coach Cheryl Szczdrowski is optimistic about her mix of new players and veterans.

Sam Miller and Emily Deeter are both out and the starting rotation was reworked with a mix of sophomores and a freshman.

“But with the experience we have from last season, we will be able to provide a solid defense and a solid serving game,” Szczodrowski said. “Our offense is young, but the most we play, the stronger we will become.”

The projected starters for the Monarchs are setter Allison Wilk, outside hitters Valerie Poma and Elizabeth Misovich, middle hitter Anaya Lechnar, defensive specialist Rachel Szalay and libero Angela Nappo.

Rounding out the Cabrini roster is senior Samantha Thompson, juniors Madison Schultz, Danielle Collins and Katie Logan, sophomore Katelyn Pinkowski and freshman Arden Fuchs.

Last year the Wildcats finished middle of the pack in their league and were knocked out of districts by Inter City, but Coach Yvone Cole is excited about this season.

“I am looking forward to this volleyball season,” she said. “We were very young last year and only graduated one senior.

“We have six returning players that will be starting on Tuesday versus Melvindale.”

Key returners include; senior Asia Pyles, juniors Haley Cope and Rebekkah Eubank and sophomores Devon Burns, Ruth Doty and Kristin Stephenson.

New this year is freshman Mikayla Thompson and rounding out the team are seniors Dana Baugh and Megan Painter.

“Our goal is to win the league and district this year,” Cole said.
