Richard hangs on for win against Flat Rock

Richard kicked off last season with a lopsided win against Flat Rock, but this year it wasn’t quite as easy.

To open the 2014 campaign last Thursday night, the visiting Pioneers had to bounce back from a late deficit to come away with a 28-21 victory, a far cry from last season’s 49-12 outcome.

“They’re much improved from last year, a little bit quicker,” said Richard Coach Tom Michalsen of the Flat Rock squad. “It was a real good, hard-fought ball game.”

It was a big night for the Pioneers’ Jake Lipetzky, who opened the scoring with an interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter. For the night, Lipetzky scored three total touchdowns and was responsible for two successful two-point conversion tries.

In the second quarter, Richard took advantage of a turnover and converted it into six more points, following a quarterback sneak by Lipetzky, which put his team up 12-0.

At that point, the Rams were able to answer twice and took a 15-12 lead into the half.

In the third quarter, Lipetzky kept a drive alive by running for a first down on fourth and long and then followed it up with a touchdown run from about 15 yards out. On the two-point try, Lipetzky hit Tom Stackpoole with a short pass to put the burgundy and white up 20-15.

Flat Rock scored early in the fourth quarter and went up 21-20.

With about eight minutes left in the game, Richard’s Dylan Yeager took off on a 20-yard touchdown run and Lipetzky followed it up by running in the two-point conversion and gave the visitors a 28-21 lead, which would stand as the final.

This week, the Pioneers will host Marion Local, which is a small Ohio school that has won state championships in each of the last three seasons. The Rams will open Huron League play with a game at Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central.
