2013 marked the eighth consecutive winning season for the Roosevelt football team under Coach Ron Adams and its third regional final appearance in as many years.

While those streaks were at risk when Adams announced his resignation after the season, he eventually changed his mind and he’s back on board for the 2014 campaign.

Leading Adams’ offense this year will be senior quarterback and team co-captain Donovan Stewart (6-foot-1, 200 pounds), who threw for 1,700 yards and 25 touchdowns a season ago. His efforts helped guide the Bears to an 11-1 record, which was the best in school history. The only loss was a 6-0 defeat against Detroit King in the regional final.

Unfortunately for Roosevelt, King now has former Bears receiver and heavily-recruited Division 1 prospect Donnie Corley, who likely would have been Stewart’s favorite target.

After a standout sophomore campaign in Wyandotte, Corley transferred to King in the offseason.

Receivers stepping in this year will be senior co-captain Richard Rosemond (6-0, 175) and fellow senior Brent Williams (6-1, 145).

At tight end will be senior co-captain Logan Carroll (6-1, 215), with junior Tyler Thorington (6-2, 185), listed as one of the backups.

Adams said Thorington should play a big role offensively, however.

“Tyler is an extremely talented young player,” Adams said. “He could be the starting quarterback for many teams in our area. His athleticism and physical play make him very valuable on both sides of the ball. Offensively we will be moving him around to attack the defense.”

Thorington, who was a three-sport varsity athlete as a sophomore, will also handle the kicking duties, now that standout Jacob Simpson has graduated.

At tailback will be seniors Kyle Bokun (5-9, 150) and Cecil Greene (5-4, 170), while the fullbacks will be senior Trenton Webster (5-5, 165) and junior Jordan McFadden (5-10, 207). Bokun, Webster and Greene all served as backups last year and each saw a fair amount of playing time.

Five seniors are scheduled to start on the Roosevelt offensive line this fall.

Co-captain Victor Filipiak (6-2, 240) is set to play as a tackle, while Wes Quillen (6-0, 348) will be at the other tackle. Taking on the guard spots will be Greg Schlimmer (6-1, 22) and Jarrod Hart (6-0, 270) and Christian Chatterson (5-7, 183) will be at center.

All five of the offensive linemen will play both ways this year, as Schlimmer, Hart, Chatterson and Carroll will all be on the defensive line and Filipiak will be a linebacker.

Also at the linebacker spots will be two more two-way players in Webster and Rosemond.

Overall, this year’s starting defense will feature a lot of new faces, as no starters have returned from the 2013 unit, which allowed an average of just 12.4 points per game.

This year’s secondary will feature Stewart and Thorington, along with seniors Nick Pizzo (5-9, 165) and Devan Wesserling (5-9, 137).

Roosevelt will kick off its new season with a Downriver League battle at Trenton on Aug. 28.
