Led by a new head coach, along with a strong group of experienced returners, Anderson will head into 2014 looking for its first winning season since 2011.

Heading up the team this year is Frank Vilardi, who took over as head coach after Derek Mclaughlin left for Riverview. In the past two seasons, the Titans finished 2-7 and 4-5, respectively.

“Were a work in progress, (with) a first-year head coach,” Vilardi said. “There are some things we have to get better at, but it’s a great group of kids and we have a lot of senior leadership.”

One of the seniors Vilaridi and his staff will count on this year is Danny McCoy, who will start at quarterback after seeing some time last year as a running back.

McCoy will have a variety of returning seniors to throw to in receivers Trey Harris, Dillan Steele, Terrance Johnson and Tristian Trueblood. Junior Christian Thomas, who was a standout on last year’s junior varsity team, should also see some passes come his way.

Running the ball in 2014 will be senior tailbacks Dejon Matthews and Hunter Majeske, as well as senior fullbacks Blake Sloan and David Bellon. While the bulk of last year’s carries went to standout Brandon Ostrowski, all four players did get some touches, as well.

Set to start on Anderson’s offensive line are senior right tackle Cody Kwasniewski, senior right guard Cody Tis, left guard Robert Rail, junior left tackle Joe McCourt and either senior David Patten or junior Hunter Angileri at center.

Lining up at the tight end spot will be senior Joe Galetto, who came up with some big catches last year for the Titans, including three grabs for 60 yards and a touchdown in a victory against Carlson.

Galetto will also be on the other side of the ball, as he’ll serve as a defensive end along with Rail and senior Brian Mullinax.

Defensive tackles will be senior Marcelo Trevino and junior William Boda, with Kwasnieski and McCourt set to see time, as well.

Tis, Sloan and Bellon will form a strong, experienced senior trio at linebacker and will be joined by junior Nico Romero.

In the secondary, Steele and Trey Harris will be at the corners, with Matthews and senior Juwan Graham at safety.

Junior Steve Georgieff is also set to see time in the defensive backfield and either he or McCoy will handle punting duties.

Kicking for Anderson will be senior Laekyn Jacuik, a soccer and basketball star for the Titans who is one of the area’s best female athletes. In practice, Vilardi said Jacuik has hit field goals from 30 yards out.

Anderson’s season will kick off Aug. 28 with a home game against Lincoln Park.
