Grosse Ile

Eight players will be back on the court this fall for Grosse Ile as the Red Devils set out to defend their Huron League title.

Veteran Coach John Shade said that junior Adam Kopp will be at No. 1 singles this fall, while freshman David Ameriguian will take on the No. 2 singles spot.

Kopp won a regional championship last year as Grosse Ile’s No. 2 singles player and was selected for The All-News-Herald Team.

Other players who Shade will rely on in 2014 will be seniors Alex Wozny, Austin Ader and Anuj Gandhi juniors Kevin Kuhn, Tyler Yezman, Thomas Rofe, Nick Shimko and Michael Hahn, and sophomores Jason Kopp and Joe Lepidi.

Last year, Jason Kopp was part of the Devils’ No. 3 doubles team, which won a league championship. The All-News-Herald duo was also runner up at both the News-Herald “A” tournament and at regionals.

Kuhn and Yezman served as last year’s No. 4 doubles team and earned a league title.

Grosse Ile is scheduled to open up its season Aug. 25 at Grosse Pointe South.

After a close battle for the Huron League title last season against Grosse Ile, Riverview will head into competition this fall with many key players back on the court.

Pirates Coach Jan Gottlin said seniors Josh Diroff, Jake St. Andre and Brandon Sutherland will compete for the top three singles spots this fall.

St. Andre, who was selected for the All-News-Herald Team in 2013, was a flight champion at last year’s News-Herald “A” tournament and a runner up at the league meet.

Returning sophomore Cole Martin and junior Michael Wright could battle it out for the No. 4 singles spot, she said.

Filling out the top doubles spots will be a strong set of returning players in seniors Matt Novak, Nolan Rochon, Jake Stubblebine and Dalton Sutherland, along with junior Brendan Roberts.

Novak and Rochon made up last year’s No. 2 doubles team and came away with a league title and All-News-Herald honors.

Back from last season’s junior varsity squad, and battling for spots, will be junior Brandon Asher, sophomore Christian Ball, senior Austin Graham, sophomore Tyler DeVoe, junior Lukas Gyomory, sophomore Gary O'Brien and sophomore Anthony Rutkowski.

New players for the Pirates are juniors Spencer Kennedy and Brendan Walsh, along with freshman CJ Odor.

“Our goals for this season are to work together as a team, be competitive in all of our matches and end up at the top of the Huron League and the regional tournament,” said Gottlin.

The season was set to open for Riverview Aug. 21 at a quad meet in Chelsea.
