With a new season underway, the Riverview boys’ soccer team is hoping to continue their great success.

The Bucs are Huron League undefeated the past two seasons with a 24-0-4 record. Last season they were 11-0-3 in the league and 17-3-5 overall.

The team made it past tough Divine Child and Melvindale teams in the district before falling 1-0 to a tough Trenton team.

In June, Coach Ben Zolynsky lost nine valuable seniors to graduation, including All State honorable mention goalie Morgan Gardocki and All State third team captain JR Bonadies.

“(They) will be missed, along with the other seven seniors from last year that won more games over the four years they played than any other Riverview soccer team,’ Zolynsky said.

Despite the losses, the Bucs do have some solid effort coming back this fall.

Juniors Ethan Hunt, Tyler Hunt and Briken Arranjaku are expected to lead the team in scoring, while seniors Jay Geiss, Zack Kresslein, Austin Gardner and Aaron Sherer will keep things locked down defensively.

In net, 6-foot, 5-inch senior Todd Kissel is ready to make his mark as one of the area’s best goalies according to Zolynsky.

Sophomore Tanner Wallace will be expected to pick up some scoring slack after graduating the top two goal scorers, but Zolynsky says Wallace is up to the challenge.

Geiss, Kissell and Tyler Hunt will lead the team in captain roles this year.

The overall goals for Zolynsky and his team are simple. A league championship, a district championship and to win the school’s first ever regional game.

Despite having a young team, the coach isn’t worried.

“We may have lost a ton of players to graduation over the past two seasons, but our goals are the same,” Zolynsky said. “We are a different team, but it is not a rebuilding year.

“We want to build on this team’s tradition of excellence. We are in it to win it every year.”

Grosse Ile

The Grosse Ile soccer team always enters the season with one goal in mind; a state championship.

Last year the Red Devils finished third in the Huron League and advanced to regionals before bowing out of the state playoff run with a loss to Macomb Lutheran North.

The team lost a few big players in the form of Jeff Drzyzga, Lorenzo Galati and Grady Bennett, but return a number of familiar faces.

Nick Hazzard is back on the pitch after being named second team All State last year, as is Brady Wagel and Wyatt Garner (all district goalie).

Midfielders this season include; Tanner Coolsaet, Sam Reckley, Jacob Drzyzga, Chris Fleming, Ibrahim Al-Jerdi and Danny Masserant

Jarek Schimdt and Jason Sassack are back as defenders and Liam McNally at forward rounds out the returning players.

New players include forwards Kyle DeSana, David Cardinal and Austin McNiel, midfielders Brent Melhourn, Preston Janeski and Francesco Cusumano and defenders Finbar Hurley, Justice White, Joe Lonc and Nick Aston.

DeSana has lined up a tough schedule to prepare his team for this season with games scheduled against Troy Athens, Frontier Int’l Academy, Muskegon Orchard View, Stevenson Lakeshort and the Williamston Tournament loaded with top-10 teams.

Flat Rock

After a tough season of a 5-10-1 record last year, the Flat Rock boys’ soccer team enters 2014 with high expectations.

The Rams will be lead by a senior class of five players, all of whom have been with the program since they were freshmen.

“We are counting on their experience and abilities to help us improve upon our record this year,” Coach Michael Wagner said.

Tommy Baker is back as the team’s top defender and Wagner said he has been proving himself as a great team leader so far this season.

“His attitude and abilities will be the greatest asset on and off the field for the team,” he said.

The Rams are also celebrating success in that for the second time, the program has enough players to form a JV squad, helping to get some of the younger and less experienced players valuable playing time.
