Football: Flat Rock focused on future, teamwork for 2014 PHOTO GALLERY

After a tough season in 2013, the Flat Rock football team is all about the team and the future.

Despite the size, both in numbers and stature, the Rams are ready to tackle the 2014 season.

“They’re here working for the team,” Coach Tom Oestrike said. “That’s one thing you can tell; we’re not very big and we’re not very fast, but we’re really working on playing with great technique.”

It’s just three days into the official MHSAA season, but the Rams are already working hard.

“(We’ve been working on) conditioning and getting the basic concepts in and instilling the team attitude,” Oestrike said. “Everybody’s here (and) everybody’s ready to go on time.

“I’ve got great senior leadership, so I couldn’t be happier in that aspect.”

Of the 27 players on the squad, 14 are seniors, a huge leap from the four seniors that led the team last season.

But last year is not at all what Flat Rock is focusing on.

“We don’t even talk about it,” Oestrike said. “It’s a totally different team, a totally different group.

“We learned our lessons; we learned what we had to do from last year. The biggest thing is we needed to learn to play as a team and not as individuals (and) that’s what this group is all about.”

For the next two weeks until the season starts, the Rams will just look to continuous improvements rather than specific games and opponents.

“If we worry about other opponents, then we’re not gonna get better ourselves,” Oestrike said. “If we take care of our own business, then everything else will take care of itself.

“We’ll just get better. Every drill and every second of every day.”
