In recognition of their stellar high school track and field careers, four area seniors were invited to compete at the recent Midwest Meet of Champions in Ohio and represent the state of Michigan.

On the boys’ side, Roosevelt’s Darryl Couch and Lincoln Park’s Robert Atwater made the trip to Granville High School, which is located just east of Columbus, while Anderson’s Breanna Luba and Allen Park’s Sabrina Williams were invited to compete on the girls’ side.

The event, which was held June 14, pitted many of the best seniors from Michigan, Ohio and Indiana against each other.

On the girls’ side, the Ohio team took first with 214 points, Michigan (158) was second and Indiana (101) third. Ohio (263) also won on the boys’ side, while the Indiana (113) team was second and the squad from Michigan (99) was third.

For the day, Luba was third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.67 and she was fifth in the 300m hurdles (44.59). Luba had an incredible high school career with the Titans, which she capped off at the state finals with a third-place finish in the 300m hurdles and a sixth-place finish in the 100m hurdles, which earned her all-state honors in both.

Williams, who was a standout in both track and cross country at Allen Park, took eighth in the 1,600m (5:16.53) event. Recently, her second-place finish in the 1,600m at Division 1 regionals earned her a trip to the state finals and this fall she will continue her athletic career at Grand Valley State University.

Atwater was fifth in the high jump (6-06.00) at the Midwest Meet and took sixth in the long jump (22-06.75). He was the 2013 state high jump champ and this season was one of the state’s best in the high jump, long jump and pole vault and at the state finals finished in the top 10 in all three, despite an injury.

Couch ran in the 4x200 relay (1:29.29) and teamed up with Brandon Rutland (Detroit Cody), Travon Phillips (Kalamazoo Central) and Jamil Banks (Grand Blanc) in the event. This spring, Couch was a key member of the Bears’ dominant relay teams and at the state finals was part of the all-state 4x400 and 4x100 teams, which both broke school records that day.
