Trenton's Murray, Inter-City's Barber and Kraatz honored

The Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association recently announced its 2014 All-State Team and three Downriver-area players have been honored.

Trenton senior Brett Murray was named to the Division 2 Second Team, while Inter-City was represented by junior Luke Barber on this year’s Division 4 First Team and senior Evan Kraatz on the Division 4 Second Team.

Murray helped lead the Trojans to a share of the Downriver League championship, as well as a district title, a regional crown and a trip to the state quarterfinals at University of Michigan last week against Richmond. Trenton also set a school record for victories, earning 34 before the 2014 campaign was over.

For the season, Murray hit .413 in 104 at-bats and led the team with a total of 43 hits. He also topped the squad in doubles with 13, was second in RBIs with 28 and was tied for third in runs scored with 32 for 2014.

For Inter-City, Barber was dominant on the mound in his junior campaign and also had a big year at the plate in a season where the Chargers won yet another district title and made another trip to the regional final game.

On the hill, he finished with a 2.45 ERA in 45.2 innings pitched and a 5-3 record, along with 27 strikeouts and 21 walks allowed.

At the dish, Barber hit .419 in 74 at-bats and had a team-high 26 RBIs and nine doubles. He also scored 20 runs and was a perfect 11-for-11 when trying to steal.

For Kraatz, the honor caps off what was a phenomenal high school athletic career at Inter-City, which included the basketball all-time state assist record and the 2013-14 state hoops’ Class D Player of the Year.

Kraatz finished the baseball season at or near the top in most of the Chargers’ offensive categories, as he hit .514 with 38 hits in 74 at-bats, scored 37 runs, recorded 17 RBIs and stole 24 bases in 26 attempts.

On the mound, Kraatz threw 13.1 innings in 2014, finishing with a 3.59 ERA, two saves and nine strikeouts.
