There is an old adage in baseball that says you can never have enough starting pitching, well it turns out that it applies to softball as well. The Allen Park girls’ softball team used two dominate starting pitching performances by Miranda Herbert to edge Dearborn 3-1 and capture yet another Division 1 district championship Saturday afternoon. The Jaguars’ ace threw the ball past the Pioneer hitters all day racking up 12 strikeouts, including the first four batters she faced, while only surrendering four hits. “Miranda threw the ball well all day,” said Jags Manager Patsy Curnell. “Luckily our offense was able to plate three runs and that was enough for us to come out on top.” Chelsea Warga put Allen Park on the board with a RBI single in the second and finished 2-for-3 on the day. Hailey Lazarek came around to score an inning later on a costly Dearborn error to put the Jags up 2-0 and that was all the run support Herbert would need. Dearborn nearly rallied in the fourth after Sabrina Coleman singled in Rachel Konchal who led off the inning with a double, but Herbert was able to get out of the jam without further damage and the Pioneers would only manage two more baserunners for the game. Curnell said that she was proud of the way her young team has grown after losing six seniors from last year’s team that reached the regional final. “This is a very unique group,” said Curnell. “We were young and inexperienced to begin with, but this team continues to grow and I have very high hopes because they grind and never give up.” Sammi Howell went 1-for-2 with a walk and had the third Jag RBI. Coleman pitched a complete game for Dearborn striking out five and walking only one in the loss. Allen Park reached the final after crushing Lincoln Park 11-0 in the first semi-final game and Dearborn ran over an over matched Fordson squad 23-0 in three innings in the second.
