In four previous meetings this season against division-rival Cabrini, Gabriel Richard came out on the losing end each time.

Saturday, in the Division 2, District 78 semifinals, it was a different story.

Sophomore Bella McLaury hurled a pair of shutouts on Saturday morning. Her first propelled her Pioneers to a 5-0 victory over the Monarchs. Detroit Community then felt her wrath in the district title game, which GR won by a score of 17-0.

“We lost all four times to Cabrini this year but Bella has had a bad back, she’s been an injured, and Cabrini never saw her,” GR Coach Bob Wilkerson said. “So we took our lumps at the end of the year resting her but it paid off. We knew whether we won the actual district or not, beating Cabrini would be our district championship.”

Hailee Murphy came through big in the winning effort, going 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI against Cabrini. In the same game Jessica Baginski had an RBI and a run scored.

“Hailee’s probably our most improved player of the year,” Wilkerson said. “She hyperventilates when she makes a mistake and made one early on by missing a bunt sign. But she more than made up for it today.”

Channing Brzys of the Monarchs pitched a gem herself, but errors in the field handicapped her and the Monarchs all morning long.

“Both pitchers pitched well, no one really got a lot of hits,” Cabrini Coach Debbie Norman said. “We gave them a lot of extra outs. We put them on the scoreboard in the 3rd with a throwing error and then were playing catch up all game long. Giving teams extra outs has kind of been our achilles’ heel all year long.”

Cabrini finishes off a fine season with a record of 21-8.

The district champion Pioneers will head to Manchester high school next week to compete in the regional tournament.
