The Trojans managed to keep the Red Devils off the board and went on to earn the trophy with a 4-0 victory, guided by a strong start from Grant Dukus, along with some timely hitting and base running. Both starters went the distance in the contest, as Dukus and Steven Plyler each put in seven innings of work for their squads. Dukus allowed only four hits, struck out four and didnít yield a walk, while Plyler allowed only one earned run, gave up eight hits, three walks and he struck out six. Trenton got its first run in the top of the second after Brett Murray walked and was later knocked in on a hit by Nick Bondy. In the third, Dukus reached with a single, moved up on a walk and a hit batter, then scored courtesy of an error commited on a ball that was hit by Solomon Markus. Grosse Ileís biggest threat of the day came in the bottom of the third inning, as the squad had two men on with only one out. Dominik Mackowski led off with a single and then Thomas Lowler hit a ground ball that retired Mackowski at second, but allowed Lowler to safely reach first on a fielderís choice. Next up, Lorenzo Galati was able to get on thanks to an error. Tommy Daly followed in the order for the Devils and hit a high pop up to third base that was dropped, but still counted as the second out due to the infield fly run. With two outs, Dukus faced his pitching counterpart in Plyler and got him to ground out to second to end the inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Brady Tanguay reached base with a bunt single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Cody Montroy, then scored on an error on a ball hit by Murray. To add an insurance run in the top of the seventh, Tanguay led off with a single and then scored on a double hit by Murray. Some strong defense late in the game also helped the Trojans hold back the Devils. Playing second base, Tanguay snagged a liner that was headed for right field, while third baseman Ryunosuke Ando made a couple of nice plays at the hot corner, including one in which he left his feet to make a throw and still gunned down the runner. For the day, Dukus was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, Tanguay was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Murray was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI and Bondy was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Grosse Ileís other hits belong to Daly, Brandon Lippert and Alex Moyer. With the victory, Trenton advanced to Division 2 regionals and will play Saturday at 10 a.m. at Livonia Ladywood.
