At one point it looked as if Southgate Anderson was going to run and hide from Dearborn Fordson in Thursday's district semifinal game at Dearborn HS. The Titans controlled play early in the game and scored in the opening 8 minutes to grab a 1-0 lead.

And when the Titans went ahead 2-0 in the first half it looked as if this was going to be an easy day on the turf for visitors from Southgate. It was almost as if the second half was going to be nothing more than a formality.

Bur coach Wedad Budop's Tractors would not go quietly. Give Fordson credit for playing hard until the final horn.

Fordson cut the lead in half in the first 2 minutes of the second half and made a few runs at tying the game but the Titans held on for a 3-1 win to advance to Friday's championship game. Southgate will face Garden City in the finals at 4 p.m. at Crestwood HS. The Cougars blanked Dearborn 2-0 in the other semifinal game at Dearborn High.

The Titans controlled much of the play but Fordson was in this game the whole way. The Tractors showed impressive ball possession and had their share of opportunities.

At the other end, the Titans also had good scoring chances that either went wide, high or were stopped by Fordson goalie Batoul Barakat, who played an impressive game in net for Fordson.

Anderson's Anna Mehall was equally up to the challenge in the Anderson net. The sophomore, who began the season on JV and is playing her first year of soccer, made some strong saves throughout the game.

At 33:19 of the first half, Anderson's Laekyn Jaciuk raced down the left side, set up by a nice pass from their own end, and scored to give the Titans the 1-0 lead.

About a minute later, Anderson's Andrea Thornsberry took a hard shot that was stopped by Barakat. A few seconds later, Jennifer Ibarra fired a shot just over the bar as the Titans were buzzing.

At 24:30, Fordson's Lamah Nahle took a hard shot that Mehall had to reach high to keep out of the net.

Both teams kept coming with opportunities. Anderson's Ibarra had another shot from close range that was tipped over the bar.

The Titans made it 2-0 with 18:10 left in the half when Thornsberry broke in down the middle all alone and buried the shot.

With 16:30 left in the half, Laekyn Jaciuk drilled the post with a rocket shot for the Titans.

In the second half, Fordson scored at 38:43 to cut the lead to 2-1.

But the Titans answered quickly. Jaciuk scored to make it a two-goal game again with 34:51 to play.

Both teams had chances in the second half but the strong goaltending at both ends continued the rest of the way.
