What started out like batting practice and some shaky defense ended with strong pitching and solid defense as host Grosse Ile held off New Boston Huron 5-2 in a league baseball game under sunny skies on Monday afternoon. Left-hander Steve Plyler got the win, starting and finishing for the Red Devils. Mark Cash pitched for the Chiefs and took the loss. Huron put two runs on the board in the first inning. With Devin Collins at first and two outs Ė both on strikeouts Ė Cash delivered a hard single to centerfield to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Miles Molnar then hit a pop-up between centerfield and shortstop that should have been caught but fell in and Cash scored to make it 2-0. The Red Devils answered in the bottom of the first thanks to two Huron errors and some timely hitting. After Thomas Lowler reached on an error, Lorenzo Galati ripped a double to left-center to make it 2-1. With two outs and runners on second and third, Eric Smorch hit a big single to right field to score two runs and give the hosts a 3-2 lead. Brandon Lippert then singled to right field and drove in a run to make it 4-2. But the Devils werenít done. Dom Mackowski singled to left to make it 5-2. Joe Vollmer singled but the inning finally ended when Huron gunned down the GI runner at the plate. Still, the damage was done as Grosse Ile had four consecutive singles with two outs and a 5-2 lead after one inning. Huronís Chase McKitrick singled up the middle and Jake Simmers walked in the second but Plyler got a big strikeout to end the inning. Grosse Ileís Tommy Daly cranked a two-out double in the second but didnít score. In the top of the third, Cash had a one-out single but didnít score. In the top of the fourth, Huron had two runners on and one out but the Devils got a force at third and then ended the inning on a fly out.
