Riverview cruises past Flat Rock

The Riverview soccer team kicked its way past Flat Rock 9-1 on Saturday.

For the first time this season, Riverview earned a mercy victory, as they scored early and often in knocking off Flat Rock for the second time this year.

Not only did the Pirates get scoring from the usual sources, they also got a goal and an assist from standout defender and highly touted college recruit Chelsey Warlick. The goal was the first of the junior's tremendous career at Riverview.

Also getting into the offensive stat sheet, was junior keeper Miranda Cobbs, who earned an assist after a long goal kick got past the Ram defense, and senior Kirsten Chambers was able to breakaway and score.

Chambers started the scoring for the Pirates as she scored in the 6th minute on an assist by Warlick. Three minutes later, Kaeley Coleman scored to put the Pirates up 2-0. The goal was the fifth of the season for the talented freshman. Kealey has teamed up with her twin sister Ashley to provide the big spark the Pirates needed with a couple of key senior departures from last year's team.

In the 16th and 17th minutes, sophomore Haley Pernicano scored back-to-back goals to give the Pirates a quick 4-0 lead.

Riverview scored another two quick goals (both in the 21st minute) as Chambers scored her second of the day and freshman Jenna Winchel added her second of the season to put the Pirates up 6-0.

With the large early lead, head coach Pete Cano was able to get a lot of playing time for every member of the team. Riverview led 6-0 at halftime.

Chambers started the scoring early in the second half as she slipped by the Ram defense and walked in on their keeper, scoring in the left corner of the net.

Flat Rock would get on the board just 3 minutes later, as they were able to capitalize on a penalty kick after a foul was called against the Pirates in the box. The goal would make the score 7-1.

Another 3 minutes later, Warlick drilled home a shot off a corner kick by Chambers.

In the 57th minute, Chambers ended the game early, scoring her fourth goal of the game to make it 9-1.

Riverview improves to 7-2-2 in the Huron League and 8-4-2 overall. They finish off the regular season with three games next week, starting at home on Monday against Monroe Jefferson. They then travel to New Boston Huron on Tuesday, before finishing the season at home for senior night on Thursday against Carleton Airport.
