Nick Sanscrainte was feeling good while venturing to Lake Erie Metropark Golf Course for the annual News-Herald Golf Tournament. As was Cabrini Coach Kevin Logan, who regularly holds the feeling when it comes to his two-time captain.

But Sanscrainte's performance against Downriver's best prep golfers on Friday exceeded his own expectations. The Cabrini senior shot a 74 to win the individual tournament, topping Huron's Tyler Olson and Carlson's Patrick Hesson, who finished with a 75 and 76, respectively.

"I knew I was going to have a pretty good day but the results show itself," Sanscrainte said.

"Every time he's in a tournament, I feel he's got a good shot to win it," Logan added. "Today he put it together and he did it. When we're on the practice range, you see him practice he strikes the ball well, he putts well, he chips well.

"I'm just glad he got an opportunity to finish well and win this tournament, especially the News-Herald, it's really nice."

Sanscrainte wasn't alone when it came to firsts. Logan said one of his golfers had never finished as well at a tournament as Sanscrainte did on Friday.

"It's definitely a first for me and hopefully many more," Logan said. "He's been the captain of our team for the last two years and he set a really good precedent. There's a lot of good kids following behind him."

Logan said Sanscrainte's two years worth of hard work is starting to pay off. He was pleased that the senior's parents were on hand to celebrate finishing first.

"I'm just glad everybody was here to see him win like this," Logan said. "This is fantastic."

With the Catholic High School League championship on May 19, Logan and Sanscrainte both hope that Friday's performance carries over for Cabrini.

"We got the CHSL championship on Monday and he's peaking at the right time," Logan said. "I'm hoping he's going to be real strong there, too."
