For the first time, the Carlson boys’ golf team is the News Herald Champion.

The Marauders shot a combined 322 to take the first-place trophy, edging second-place Grosse Ile by one stroke.

The Red Devils finished with a 323 and Huron was third with a 326.

Individually, Cabrini’s Nick Sanscrainte was top medalist, edging all golfers by shooting a 74.

Huron’s Tyler Olson was second with a 75 and Carlson’s Patrick Hesson was third with a 76.

“It was a surprise,” Carlson Coach Rocco Giorgi said. “We played good.

“It was nice playing at our home course and we’ve never won this tournament before.”

Giorgi said it wasn’t expected going in. The weather has prevented much golfing time this season, but Giorgi said his team is full of young, strong golfers.

“We knew Trenton, Grosse Ile and Huron are always really good,” Giorgi said. “We were just hoping to compete somewhere in that top three for sure.”
