The Trenton girls’ soccer team lined up with Allen Park on Friday evening and knew it wasn’t going to be easy – for a number of reasons.

“They (Allen Park) are a good team and we have been a little beat up,” said Trenton coach Mike Hatfield, whose team is chasing its fourth straight district title this year.

Trenton came out and played a strong first half and controlled the game early on against the host Jaguars. The Trojans scored twice in the first half and made it stand up for a 2-0 win over Allen Park in a chilly game under the lights.

Trenton improved to 7-4-2 overall on the season.

“Allen Park was competitive,” Hatfield said. “We played a really strong first half but might have gotten a little tired in the second half. We are still trying to recover from the long Easter break. All our conditioning before the season is gone.”

Trenton leaned on a pair of freshmen against Allen Park. Marla Cobetto and Eylssa Moody, both ninth-graders, scored for the Trojans. Freshman keeper Christina Wynn earned the shutout in goal.

The Trojans did a good job of controlling the ball and using both sides of the field. And with a choppy field, it wasn’t easy.

“The weather has done some damage to some of these fields and it makes things difficult for us because we are a possession, short-passes team,” Hatfield said. “The bad field conditions can throw off our timing a little bit.”

And so can a good opponent, which Allen Park clearly was on Friday.

“We played well,” said Allen Park coach Justin Hunter. “We were competitive against a very good team.”

Trenton is playing without a few of their key players, including leading scorer Nadia Kurtzhals, a sophomore.

The Trojans face a big week coming up with games against state-ranked Avondale (home on Monday) and at Carlson (Wednesday).
