Before the opening kickoff between Grosse Ile and Milan, one of the officials visited the Big Reds and said something about this being a big game since both teams were unbeaten coming into Friday’s contest.

The Milan coach said something to the effect of “we will let you know after we beat them.” That comment got a laugh out of his players as they huddled up along the sideline.

But it was Grosse Ile that had the last laugh, beating the talented Big Reds 2-0 on a chilly yet dry afternoon of soccer on the island.

Grosse Ile not only won the game but dominated from the start.

Abby King, with an assist by Kate Tobin, got the scoring started midway through the first half. Both were playing center midfield when Caroline Fleming used her support and passed back to Tobin. The sophomore chipped the ball through a defensive hole and King made a run into space, saw the Milan goalkeeper was off her line and sent a nice shot over the goalkeeper's head, right under the top crossbar.

The Red Devils took the 1-0 lead into halftime. Milan managed just a few shots on goal in a half played mostly on the other side of the field.

“It was a slow start, but our team slowly woke up and we could limit Milan's speedy offense and start our offense from the defensive end,” said Grosse Ile coach Amy Rossow. “Caroline, Kate, Abby King, Kelsie Krauss and the rest of our midfield line worked extremely hard to control the game and set up our chances and limiting Milan’s strong midfield.”

In the second half, Grosse Ile started out even stronger and maintained a steady pace.

King then sent a through-ball outside wide to Krauss that Fleming had enough room to make a cut across the 6-yard box. Krauss sent the ball high, back across the box and a flying Fleming headed the ball under the top crossbar while she was getting undercut by a Milan defender.

The goal made it 2-0 for the home team.

GI continued to hold off the Milan offense with Olivia Reckley, Nicole DeSana, Melissa Brick, Olivia Koklanaris, Alyson Lemerand, and Katie WIlliams joining the midfield line, holding strong and limiting the Big Red's scoring opportunities.

The Red Devils improved to 9-0-2 overall and 7-0 in the Huron League. Milan suffers its first loss of the season.
