It was a 2-1 win for Trenton on Wednesday evening and all of the scoring belonged to Marla Cobetto.

It was the freshman’s first game back after a minor injury and she wasted no time in letting everyone know she was ready to play again.

“It was her first game back and I was actually not gonna play her just based on where we would fit in the league and where it would work out,” Trenton Coach Mike Hatfield said. “But she was begging me and sometimes you just give into players.”

Good thing he gave in.

Cobetto scored with 24:04 left in the first half to put her Trojans on board.

Minutes later, she again found the back of the net to cap the Trojan scoring for the night.

“I just wanted to play so bad because I loved the game and missed it, even though I was only out for a couple of weeks,” she said. “After scoring, my adrenaline was rushing and I was proud to represent scoring for Trenton soccer.”

Being a freshman on a traditionally strong and successful program is not lost on Cobetto.

“Being a freshman on varsity is an honor and it is a great opportunity to play with talented teammates and an experienced coach,” she said.

Hatfield has been pleased with Cobetto’s efforts.

“I’m really impressed with her because she started the season on JV,” he said. “She’s worked her way up and that’s huge.

“She had two good goals; two good runs.”

And the freshman knows that although she got credit for the goals, it’s all about a team effort.

“Our team’s performance was great tonight and without teamwork, we couldn’t have gotten those goals,” she said. “We have great potential, and with hard work and dedication, we can all get to where we want to be.”

The Trojans currently sit second in the Downriver League with just a few weeks to play.

Cobetto will look to keep adding to her debut season Friday night when her Trojans take on Allen Park in Downriver League action.
