During spring break last week, Allison Manning was playing soccer beneath the glowing sun in Panama City Beach, Fla..

Chilly temperatures and brisk winds couldn't slow the senior forward while returning to the field on Monday for a Downriver League showdown against Truman. She scored a hat trick to lead Woodhaven to a 5-1 victory over Truman.

Manning didn't get a break from the sport during spring break but enjoyed being back with her teammates.

"I actually played soccer on the beach while I was down there so I never really stopped," she said. "It felt really good to be back on the field."

Manning scored the first goal of the game 7:35 into the game, giving her 90 goals for her career.

Emily Cossins evaded two defenders to net Truman's lone goal at the 12:01 mark. Truman Coach Franco Antonnicola praised the junior's efforts, but said his team didn't do enough to keep rolling.

"She's a good player. She's probably our best forward that we have," Antonnicola said. "But it all starts with midfield. Midfield was a little weak today. We didn't generate enough to score.

"We'll be OK. We'll be better the next game."

Sophomore Abbey Lorenz's blistering kick gave Woodhaven a 2-1 lead with 2:39 remaining in the first half. The Warriors never looked back.

Manning scored her second goal of the game with 25:01 remaining in the game. Sophomore Christina Cobetto found the net for the first time in the game nearly two minutes later.

With 2:57 remaining in the game, Manning completed the hat trick. Woodhaven Coach Scott Hoye said Manning's scoring-efforts helped fuel a strong second half.

"It gave us that breathing room and plus, once we got it going, we started clicking with our passes, too," Hoye said. "Everything started coming together. We were very rusted at first. Even though we practiced yesterday, it's been two weeks off, so it's just been a little bit of a transition to get back into it."

With the loss, Truman's focus shifts to a DRL matchup with Anderson on Wednesday. A battle with Carlson follows later in the week.

"Those two games will be hard games as well, tough games," Antonnicola said. "We'd like to win at least one of them to give us a chance to play in the upper-half of the division."

Manning's hat trick gives her 92 career goals. Still undefeated in the DRL, she'll look to inch closer to 100 when Woodhaven returns to action to face Kennedy on Wednesday.

"It's definitely a goal I've had since I was little because I wanted to play high school, but it means a lot because it just means I'm getting one step closer to my goal," Manning said.

Her goal?

"To break 100 goals and to beat Saline in districts," she said.
