They didn’t get the first goal, but they got the last five to add a notch in the win column.

The Woodhaven soccer team traveled to Trenton and knocked off the Trojans 5-1 in another battle of DRL heavyweights.

After going down early, the Warriors battled back to get the win on a cold night that turned to drizzle as the clock ticked down.

Coach Scott Hoye, who’s Warriors are 8-0-2 on the season, said it was important not to give up.

“You get down 1-0 and you put your head down for a little bit, but they didn’t’ keep it down for long,” he said. “They came back and fought, fought, fought to make it 1-1 and we were able to make it 2-1 before the half. “

With 14:22 to play in the first half, Nicole Losek tied the game at one-each to put the Warriors on board.

Freshman Katlyn Varney got the game winner with 7:45 to go in the first half and the 2-1 score held through the 40-minute buzzer.

In the second half, Hoye said his team stepped it up to get the win.

“In the second half I thought we took the play to them,” he said. “It got a little chippy at times.”

Allison Manning kept the offense going, scoring 15 minutes into the second half with a shot to the fall left.

Miranda Ratusznik scored on a nice rebound midway through and the Warriors cruised from there.

Manning capped the scoring with 28 seconds to go, taking the green light shot from 30 yards out, sending it flying into the back of the net.

Hoye knew how important the win was against a big DRL opponent and rival.

“I played for Woodhaven,” he said. “As a grad, you walk into a Trenton game and you don’t need to say anything; it’s already said.

“When they know it’s game time, they buckle down and they’re in there. You don’t have to say anything for a Woodhaven-Trenton game.”
