SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Cabrini goes 3-1 in opening week, Gabriel Richard 1-1

Looking to build off of their 2013 AA Catholic League title win, Allen Park Cabrini got off on the right foot this season. The Monarchs swept one doubleheader and split the other to come out of their opening week with a 3-1 record.

On Tuesday, April 1 Cabrini squared off with Lutheran North, at home, and they won the first game of the doubleheader 10-0.

Channing Brzys struck out 10 batters, only allowing one hit and three walks. She was crowned the winning pitcher. She also went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI at the plate.

Angela Nappo went 1-for-2 and knocked in a pair of runs as well.

In the second game, Maddy Schultz went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Nappo went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI for the Monarchs. They completed the sweep of Lutheran North by defeating them 14-9 in the second game.

Cabrini was scheduled to play on Friday, April 4 but the game was cancelled due to rain. They made up a doubleheader against Notre Dame Preparatory on Sunday, April 6. The doubleheader was originally schedule to be played on March 25.

The visiting Monarchs bested Notre Dame Prep 6-4 in the first game.

Schultz went 2-for-3 and clubbed a home run.

Montana Spears also knocked one out of the park, going 1-for-3 on the day.

Lilly Ranspach went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and Peyton Lankford went 2-for-4.

Brzys pitched the game and picked up her second win of the season.

Cabrini dropped the second game 8-1. The game was tied 1-1 until NDP exploded to the tune of 7 runs in the 7th inning.

“We showed our youth a little bit in that game, particularly that inning,” Cabrini Coach Debbie Norman said. “We let it just spiral out of control.”

Amber Steelman went 2-for-4 in the losing effort.

The Monarchs will travel to Bishop Foley for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 8. They’ll return home to play Cass Tech the following day.

Gabriel Richard kicked off their season on the road, playing Notre Dame Prepatory on Tuesday, April 1.

The Pioneers won their season opener by edging Notre Dame Prep 2-1.

Trailing 1-0 going into the 7th inning, Raven Montes delivered a two-RBI double to left field to knock in Jackie Reitmeyer and Alex Montes.

“It was kind of like the Tigers season opener,” GR Coach Bob Wilkerson said. “We couldn’t get anything going until late.”

Reitmeyer went 2-for-3 with a steal in the contest, while sophomore Bella McLaury struck out 12 batters to earn the victory.

The Pioneers struggled in the nightcap of the doubleheader, managing only 3 hits.

Notre Dame Prep went on to win 6-0.

Junior pitcher Alex Montes allowed 6 hits and walked 8 batters. She took the loss in her Pioneer debut.

Gabriel Richard is scheduled to host Flat Rock at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 7th before taking on Divine Child in a home and home series. They visit Divine Child on Wednesday before hosting the Falcons on Friday afternoon.

Inter-City is scheduled to visit Parkway Christian on Tuesday, April 15th. The game will be Inter-City’s season opener.
