Huron League roundup

On a perfect late afternoon for soccer, the Red Devils outplayed the Riverview Pirates to earn a 5-1 victory on the island on Wednesday. In an extremely physical game that featured dozens of fouls, Grosse Ile was able to put together a strong enough offensive attack to drop Riverview to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Huron League, while the Red Devils remain undefeated.

“We were outplayed and outcoached by Grosse Ile,” said Riverview coach Pete Cano. “They wanted it more than we did. We thought we were prepared but obviously we were not, they dominated us from the first whistle. It is a big wake up call for the players and myself.”

Grosse Ile got on the board at the 4-minute mark after a handball was called in the box against the Pirates. The PK was good and Grosse Ile was quickly up 1-0.

The teams would play pretty even over the next 30 minutes with both teams having a few scoring chances, including one Red Devil shot that bounded off the crossbar.

However, with about 5 minutes remaining in the half, the Red Devils strung together some nice passes and were able to finish a nice cross past Pirate keeper Miranda Cobbs. Less than 4 minutes later, they struck again off a misplayed ball in the Pirates box on the choppy field. Grosse Ile led 3-0 at halftime.

The Pirates came out stronger in the second half and created a few quality opportunities, but nothing that was too dangerous. Grosse Ile would put the game out of reach in the 66th minute, as they scored to go up 4-0. Riverview was finally able to get on the board with just under 5 minutes remaining when Amber Potter was able to redirect a perfect free kick by Kirsten Chambers past the Red Devil keeper.

This was the first goal allowed by Grosse Ile on the season. The assist by Chambers, who is an Adrian College commit, was the 77th of her career, which ranks her in the top 10 all-time in Michigan.

Grosse Ile would finish the scoring on the day a mere 15 seconds after the Riverview goal.

Riverview next faces a very strong Woodhaven team on Saturday and then returns to Huron League action next Wednesday when they host New Boston Huron in their last game before spring break.

Huron blanks Airport 7-0

The Huron Chiefs traveled to Airport and came home with a 7-0 victory on Wednesday. Madelyn Ormanian paced the Chiefs with two goals. Alexis Gonzalez, Kayla Frederick, Sydney Toth, Olivia Olson, and Riley Shoenscheck also tallied goals.

Alexa Scroggie dished out two assists. Olson, Toth, Darian Chirillo, and Shayla Glynn earned an assist each. Goalkeeper Carley Aimes earned her second consecutive shutout.

“We moved the ball very well but still had some trouble finding quality scoring chances in the first half,” said Huron coach Dan Rossow. “We cleaned that up by scoring six goals in the second half. Our defense played very well and allowed only one shot.”

The Chiefs (2-1) host SMCC on Friday.

The Flat Rock soccer team tied SMCC 4-4 on Wednesday night. Marina Steffke scored two goals and had an assist for the Rams. Sarah Wrase and Lauren Woods also scored for Flat Rock. Cassidy Marrow had two assists for the Rams.
