The Woodhaven girls’ soccer team scored early and often on Wednesday afternoon, triggering the mercy rule against the visiting Allen Park Jaguars and crushing them 8-0.

“It seemed like any (ball) that was in the air or anything that was debatable, we took care of,” said Woodhaven Coach Scott Howe. “Our counter attacks today were fabulous. There were a couple times where (Allen Park) came down our zone and as soon as we turned the ball back away from them we were able to come back on – aggressive - pretty fast.”

Abbey Lorenz and Allison Manning each netted hat tricks on the afternoon.

Lorenz’s three goals all came in the first half.

“Allison’s a senior, she’s very seasoned and very competitive,” Howe said. “She knows when to hold the play and when to push the play. Allison and Abbey are both huge competitors.”

Katlyn Varney and Manning scored the other two goals of the first half.

Miranda Ratusznik found the back of the next in the second half and Manning notched two more goals in the second as well. Her hat trick-clinching score made it 8-0, ending the game with over 25 minutes left on the clock.

Allen Park’s first-year coach Justin Hunter said his team made too many mental mistakes early on.

“I told the girls to work hard, to not dive in defensively and to just try to poke away at the ball,” Hunter said. “But we dove at them all first half and it made a very simple task very difficult just by all the defensive mistakes they were making.”

The Jags managed only three shots on goal in the game.

Allen Park (0-2) travels to Southgate on Monday in search of its first win.

Woodhaven (3-0 DRL, 6-0-2 overall) will play Riverview at home on Saturday morning.
