It’s always nice to start the league season off on the right foot and that is exactly what the Woodhaven soccer team did on Friday evening.

The conditions weren’t ideal; it was cold, windy and rainy, but the Woodhaven defense was hot in the team’s first DRL win of the year.

The Warriors knocked off host Carlson 4-1.

Any kick in the air was a toss up as to how it would end up with the strong wings screeching through the Marauder field, but the team’s fought as best they could.

The Warrior defense took a 2-0 lead into the half, not letting the Marauders threaten much through the first 40 minutes.

“For the first league game for us, it was very competitive,” first year Woodhaven Coach Scott Hoye said. “It was a good defensive performance for us, I thought.

“We had a couple of breakdowns we had to fix, but otherwise we controlled pretty good considering all the factors.”

Woodhaven put the pressure on early and got a scoring chance with just over 10 minutes gone by but the ball just barely hit the lower corner of the net and bounced right.

Eight minutes later, the Warriors capitalized when freshman Katlyn Varney shot one to the upper right corner of the net.

With 15:01 left to play, sophomore Abbey Lorenz found the back of the net and the 2-0 score held through the half.

Senior Allison Manning accounted for all the Woodhaven scoring in the second half.

With just under 10 gone by she gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead and capped the scoring with a penalty kick just to the left of the Carlson keeper with 11:50 to play.

Carlson got on board with 21:18 to go when Madison Shivel got one in on a weird bounce.

Hoye was please with his team’s first DRL outing but knows there is still a long season ahead to stay at the top of the league.

“We know we’ve got a lot of talent,” he said. “We’re a very special team with the talent we have and skill level. We’ve got a real tight group of girls; it could be a special year.

“Ball possession’s our main thing right now. I think we’re doing pretty well in ball possession considering the elements like today.”

Both teams will be back in action Monday when Woodhaven hosts a strong Anderson team and Carlson travels to Melvindale.
