When the first pitch was thrown Monday at Lincoln Park, it marked the beginning of Bob Kloss’ 41st season as head coach of the baseball team at Woodhaven.

While the veteran head man has obviously coached, and won, his share of share of season openers, Monday’s 5-2 victory against the Railsplitters was a little extra special for him and the team.

Recently, Lincoln Park has been a thorn in the side of the Warriors, most notably last season, when the otherwise struggling Rails knocked off Woodhaven 2-1 in a matchup on April 22 in Lincoln Park.

It was the only time the Warriors suffered a defeat to a team that was not in contention for the Downriver League title and the loss ultimately came back to haunt the purple-and-white squad, as it finished 13-5 in DRL play, only one game behind first-place Anderson and Allen Park.

“It feels good to win, because we’ve had trouble here at Lincoln Park,” Kloss said after Monday’s game. “For some reason we have trouble on this field.

This was a good start for us because we split with them last year and they beat us here. Had we beaten them both times we would have been co-champs.”

In the 2012 season, Lincoln Park knocked off Woodhaven twice, the second of which was 10-1 clubbing dished out on the Rails’ diamond.

With the baseball season now underway, Kloss said this year’s Warriors’ squad is an overall positive group that is dedicated to winning as a team, rather than any individual accomplishments.

“I’ve got a bunch of good kids,” he said. “They like each other, they root for each other, they pull for each other, nobody cries if they don’t play.”

Monday’s game was originally scheduled to be played in Woodhaven, but was moved to Lincoln Park because the Warriors’ field was not ready yet, due to the winter weather conditions that stretched into this spring.

Next on the schedule for Woodhaven is a home game Wednesday against Truman.
