On a very chilly Wednesday evening in March, the Carlson girls’ soccer team and the Edsel Ford Thunderbirds opened up their respective 2014 regular season schedules, and it was solid defense and a strong second half that propelled the Marauders to their first win of the year. Neither team was able to seize control for the better part of the first 40 minutes. Carlson scored near the end of the first half to draw first blood, and then tacked on two more second-half goals to defeat visiting Edsel Ford, 3-0. “I told the girls to push up in the second half and to crash the net as much as possible,” Marauders Coach Steve Briggs said. “We had to get it over the top of their defense. Once we spread that field out we had some better opportunities.” Sophomore Jenni Simmons scored the first two goals for the Marauders - one at the 4:14 mark of the first half and then another with 10:00 left in the second – and Kristina Torres put the finishing touches on the victory with a score at the 5:18 mark. Edsel Ford Coach Lee Hunt said he thought his team got frustrated once they fell behind. “We had some good opportunities in the first half, we even outshot them,” Hunt said. “We were carrying the play until they scored the first goal then it was kind of all downhill for us. The girls got frustrated and didn’t move off the ball well enough, but, that’s normal with inexperienced girls.” Carlson will take on Bedford on Monday. Edsel Ford does battle with Ann Arbor Huron on Wednesday.
