SOUTHGATE — The Board of Education recognized the Southgate Anderson competitive cheerleading team at its meeting Tuesday.

Twelve of the cheerleaders were at the meeting with Coach Colette Norscia.

According to Board President Paul Knott, the team won the Division 1 state championship for the third year in a row.

Norscia said the student athletes excel with the support from the community, their parents and family members, teachers and the athletic director.

She said the girls have more than a 3.3 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

It’s about the girls “raising the bar constantly and going for it all the time,” Norscia said.

She thanked the parents and grandparents of the students who always attend events and support the team. Norscia also thanked School Supt. William Grusecki and the school board for the recognition. She said the community’s support is also phenomenal.

The competitive cheerleading state competition was held in Grand Rapids in February and Norscia said more than 340 community members attended the event.

“Congratulations to all of you for your hard work,” Grusecki said.

At the meeting, the school board approved opening 50 kindergarten spots for school of choice for the 2014-15 school year.
