Inter-City charged out of the gate Thursday night with a big first quarter, but couldn’t hold on and fell to Southfield Christian 67-62 in the Class D, Region 27 championship game at West Bloomfield.

Senior Evan Kraatz had a huge night for the No. 9-ranked Chargers and finished with a game-high 28 points, while his younger brother Garrett Kraatz came away with 16 and Luke Barber netted 14.

For No. 1-ranked Southfield Christian, Bakari Evelyn scored 26 points and Lindsay Hunter finished with 20.

To help Inter-City grab a 26-14 lead after the first quarter, Barber scored 13 points which included a trio of 3-pointers, and Garrett Kraatz hit a pair of triples.

About five minutes into the second quarter, the Eagles had pulled to within two at 28-26, but seven points from Evan Kraatz put his team up 35-28 at the half.

In the third quarter, Southfield Christian went on the attack and led by seven with two minutes left.

Once again, however, Evan Kraatz came up big, as he scored five late points to tie it at 48-48 after three and then hit the first bucket of the fourth quarter to give the locals a two-point advantage.

Down the stretch, the Eagles were able to pull away, with Evelyn and Brock Washington both hitting key buckets, including two points after an Evelyn steal in the Inter-City zone.

A Garrett Kraatz triple at the 1:09 mark brought his team two within four, but the comeback attempt ultimately fell short.

Inter-City Coach Mark Kraatz said afterward that it’s tough to finish the season without a regional title and a chance to move on, but his squad gave everything it had Thursday night.

“It’s difficult when you have a goal and that goal is not met, but I can’t complain with their effort,” Kraatz said. “I thought our kids played well. I thought we were there, we had a shot, we were right there, only one play different here or there.”
