Although they managed to keep up with the Milan boys’ basketball team for about the first 10 or minutes of the game, the Big Reds were just too big and athletic for the Grosse Ile Red Devils to topple on Monday night. After one quarter of play, Grosse Ile was tied with Milan, 18-18, but it was unable to sustain that kind of pace for the rest of the night and ultimately fell to Milan by a final score of 62-48. Once things started to crumble for Coach Bryan Friel and the Red Devils, he told his team to brace for a hungrier Milan team after the half. “We knew they were going to come after us and pick it up and I’m sure they didn’t like it being an eight-point game at halftime,” Friel said. “I mean, they’re no. 4 in Class B; little old Grosse Ile shouldn’t be eight points behind. We just came out, got looks and just plain couldn’t make shots. We turned the ball over, too, and it just spiraled from there.” The Red Devils season ends with a final record of 14-10. They were able to defeat Summit Academy last week to win a district championship, their first in ten years.
