Tough defense, rebounding lead to Inter-City rout of Livingston Christian

The offense may have been hitting all of the right shots, but the defense and rebounding was the star of Inter-City’s regional semifinal win on Monday night.

The Chargers dominated on the glass from start to finish and out rebounded Livingston Christian a whopping 51-20 in the team’s 64-20 rout.

They also kept the Livingston offense at bay, only allowing a measly five points to be scored in the second half.

“That was the goal,” Inter-City Coach Mark Kraatz said. “We focused on our defense at the end; we have to get ready for Wednesday (and) I thought our guys did a nice job.”

The Chargers aren’t a very tall team, but looking at a score sheet you would never know with the boards they pull down.

“It’s just every day doing the same thing repetitively and hopefully over time they just keep moving,” Kraatz said about working on the rebounding.”

Junior Luke Barber led the team in rebounds with eight on the night and was pleased with his team’s performance.

“I thought the key was just our ball pressure,” he said. “They’re not a great shooting team, so if we put enough pressure on them, they weren’t getting by us.

“Our help defense was really good. Once they took a shot, we’re really sealing on box outs.”

The Chargers will be focusing in on defense in Wednesday’s regional final with Southfield Christian, the number one team in the state.

Barber says it will be a fun contest and his team plans to come prepared.

“I think the biggest thing, which our coach said after this game, we’ve just gotta come out with a lot of courage,” he said. “We know we can win and other people don’t think we can win, so we’ve just gotta play with courage.”
