Defense was they key and the offense wasn’t too shabby itself Monday night when the Inter-City basketball team secured itself a spot in the regional finals.

It was an easy win for the Chargers, who knocked off Livingston Christian 64-20 in the semifinals held at Walled Lake High School.

Inter-City’s Luke Barber got the night started early and the team cruised from there.

They led 15-8 after the first quarter and 32-15 at the half. Things got even better in the second half when they held Livingston to just five points, including a scoreless fourth quarter.

The Chargers shot well from the field and finished with seven triples.

Nathan Estell had three of them.

“Nate shot the ball well for us, which was a big positive,” Coach Mark Kraatz said.

Kraatz said heading into the semifinal, he thought his team had a good chance to move forward in the MHSAA state playoffs.

“We thought that if we played well, that we could pull away from them and that’s what we did,” he said. “We had scouted them and we thought we could do that.”

The Charger defense dominated on the glass, out rebounding the opponent 51-20.

Barber led the team in rebounds with eight and also scored 12 points.

Estell finished with 13 points and four rebounds.

Garrett Kraatz had seven points and four rebounds, Troy Kazlauskas had six points and six rebounds and Evan Kraatz finished with five points and six boards.

Todd Kazlauskas (four points, two rebounds), Nathanial Pardo (three points, two rebounds), Brady Fressel (two points, four rebounds) and Josh Estell (five rebounds) also contributed to the night.

The Chargers will face Southfield Christian in Wednesday’s tough regional final.

“That’s the number one team in the state and that’s the team that if we wanna win a state title, we have to go through,” Kraatz said. “And we know that.

“We know what they do, they know what we do. We know their personal, they know our personal. We’ve just gotta go out and play. We’ve gotta put the ball in the basket more times than they put the ball in the basket.”
