The Anderson competitive cheerleading team is all smiles after winning its third straight MHSAA D1 state championship.
Downriver domination- Anderson wins third straight crown, Carlson claims fourth straight PHOTOS
The Anderson cheerleaders won their third straight D1 state championship and the Carlson Marauders won their fourth straight D2 title as Downriver continued its domination of the state cheerleading finals.
Downriver can rightfully claim to be the home of Michigan High School cheerleading.
For seven straight years at least one area team has captured a Michigan High School Athletic Association state championship.
This season, for the third straight year, two local teams brought home championship banners.
The Anderson Titans won Division 1 crown for the third straight season and the Carlson Marauders won the D2 crown for the fourth time in a row and the sixth time in the last seven years.
The Titans and Marauders both compete in the Downriver League and this season Carlson was first and the Titans second in the league standings.
At last Saturdayís state finals in Grand Rapids, Anderson posted the highest score of any of the 32 teams competing and walked away with first-place honors in Division 1.
Anderson found itself in a tight race with eventual runner up Grandville, but the Titans scored a slight edge in the second and third rounds and won with a total of 785.96. Grandville finished with 783.54.
Andersonís state champs are Holly Zmijewski, Brittany Walton, Cassidy Tear, Madison Small, Brittany Prister, Bonita Overton, Adrianna Mullins, Samantha Moore, Anna Mehall, Aleta Madera, Siarra Langlois, Marisa Laginess, Jordan Jones, Kylie Gotzfried, Haley Evans, Amber Droste, Samantha Darrell, Tori Creighton, Jacklyn Carrico and Gabrielle Buscemi.
In Division 2, Carlson, Dearborn Divine Child and Allen Park have been the top-ranked teams all season and on Saturday the Marauders topped their closest rivals with a score of 780.10. The Marauders led from the start of the competition until the end. Divine Child scored 772.24 and Allen Park was third with 769.06.
Carlsonís state champs are Rhiannon Morabito, Mary Miller, Kiah Manthei, Tayler Lambart, Makenzy Kopchia, Alexis Kopchia, Emily Howard, Jordyn Hodge, Dana Hammill, Tahlia Hamilton, Jennifer Grzywinski, Mariah Grodi, Kersten Gant, Hunter Furstenberg, Hanna Berna and Jordyn Barks.
Trenton also competed in Division 2 and finished eighth with a score of 742.96.
In Division 3, Grosse Ile finished third behind state champ Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and Comstock Park. Notre Dame Prep scored 764.04 points, Comstock Park had 759.68 and Grosse Ile totaled 749.68.
