Huge nights from both Connor Phee and DeJon Matthews helped Anderson cruise to a victory Monday night against Carlson in the first round of Class A District playoffs.

With a 51-31 win over the Marauders (10-11, 8-8), the Titans (13-8, 9-7 DRL) advanced to play district host Roosevelt Wednesday night in the semifinals.

Phee finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Matthews came away with a game-high 17 points. For Carlson, Jarrett Atkinson led with nine points, while Zach Kohn and Kyle Cox both had seven points and Kohn grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

Six first-quarter points from Matthews and four from Phee helped Anderson grab a 16-7 lead after one.

Phee said that his squad set out to play to its strengths right from the start Monday night.

“We really wanted to get up and down with them a little bit,” he said. “We thought we could outrun them. We’re a little bit bigger team; we wanted to outrebound them and (outmuscle) them.”

In the second quarter, the Titans had a 23-11 advantage with about two minutes to go, but Carlson pulled to within seven at the half, thanks to an Atkinson triple and six total points from Alex Headon.

Out of the break, Phee put up six third-quarter points, which helped his squad grab a 13-point lead with about two minutes left.

Late points helped the Marauders stay alive once again, however, as Atkinson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and made it a 37-27 game going into the final quarter.

Neither team struck right away in the fourth, but a pair of Trey Harris free throws and an end-to-end layup by Matthews kicked off a dominant run that led to a commanding 48-29 lead with only two minutes to go in the game.

Soon after, the Titans were able to start celebrating and thinking about Wednesday’s battle with Roosevelt, a team that beat them twice in the regular season by scores of 39-38 and 57-55.

“It’s going to be as tough as they come, a rival in this gym, for a chance for the district final,” said Anderson Coach Dave Pratt. “It’s going to be a knock-down slugfest going all the way to the buzzer, just like our first two games this year.”

Anderson will face the Bears (12-8, 10-6 DRL) following the conclusion of the Trenton and Riverview semifinal game Wednesday night in Wyandotte.
