Huron jumped out to a big early lead in Wednesday’s district semifinal and was able to keep Cabrini at arm’s length all night.

The Chiefs (12-8, 8-6 Huron League) and Monarchs (8-11, 2-5 Catholic League) played the second semifinal game at Airport and Huron came away with a 55-42 victory in Class B, District 39 action.

With the victory, the Chiefs advanced to take on Grosse Ile in the district final on Friday, back at Airport.

Savannah Floyd led all scorers with 14 points for the Chiefs, while teammate Elizabeth Stockert came away with 11 and Summer Callahan had nine.

“We worked (well) as a team,” said Floyd. We had good passing. We were (communicating) very well. We just came together and played our heart out.”

For Cabrini, Samantha Holley had 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, and teammate Olivia Mocnik netted nine.

After the first quarter, Huron was up 14-2, guided by nine points from Stockert.

Cabrini heated up in the second quarter and was led by four points each from Mocnik and Kasey Jodway. The Chiefs, however, kept up their strong attack and led 30-19 at the half.

With about two minutes left in the third quarter, Cabrini scored to cut the deficit to 11 and had a chance to do more, as well as gain some momentum, after getting the ball right back on a Huron foul. Unfortunately for the Monarchs, they couldn’t convert ultimately trailed 45-32 after three.

In the final eight minutes seven different Chiefs scored for their team and the squad was able to walk off with the 55-42 victory.

On Friday, Huron and Grosse Ile will square at 6 p.m. at Airport for the district title. During the regular season, the two Huron League squads battled twice and both times the Devils knocked off the Chiefs by more than 10 points.
