During the regular season, Flat Rock beat Grosse Ile twice, but in Wednesday’s Class B, District 39 semifinal at Airport, the tables were turned.

The Huron League champion Rams (18-4, 14-0 Huron) fell 45-43 in overtime to the second-place Red Devils (17-3, 11-2 Huron).

With the victory, Grosse Ile advanced to take on Huron Friday for the district title, back at Airport.

Flat Rock was up by three points going into the fourth quarter, but after a tight eight minutes of play, Grosse Ile’s Kate Tobin hit a shot in the final seconds to tie the game at 40-40 and take it to overtime.

For the night, Tobin finished with 11 points and teammate Megan Swick led the way with 15.

Both teams struggled to score in overtime, but the Devils managed five points courtesy of free throws. The Rams got just one point in overtime until Hannah Myre scored two as time ran out, which wasn’t enough to close the gap and Grosse Ile went on to celebrate.

“I’m extremely happy with their effort tonight,” said Devils Coach Sandy Tobin. “We were going (out) to keep them off the boards and we were going to play the best defense of our lives tonight.”

The Rams’ star player Paige Villemure, who missed Monday with an ankle injury, played the last three quarters and gave a valiant effort, but wasn’t at 100 percent only finished with five points.

“She was a real trooper,” said Flat Rock Coach Marc Villemure. “I had no idea she was going to play that much. I told her to give it a go in the second quarter. I was about ready to pull her and she seemed to get a little bit better and better as the game went, but it hurt like heck, it’s so swollen. She did what she could.”

In the first quarter, the Devils went up 14-6, helped out by two Swick triples, but late points from Flat Rock’s Morgan Villemure pulled it to 14-10 heading into the second.

Morgan Villemure finished with a game-high 19 points and teammate Paige Nemeth came away with 10.

A Nemeth shot at the end of the second quarter cut the deficit to two at 25-23 heading into the break.

Late in the third quarter, the Rams grabbed a lead after a Morgan Villemure 3-pointer and two points from Paige Villemure.

Throughout the final quarter, Flat Rock kept its narrow lead. However, Grosse Ile rebounded on missed a Rams’ free throw in the last seconds and Tobin went nearly the length of the court to score a buzzer-beater, which tied it at 40-40 and gave her six points for the quarter.

Free throws were abundant for the Devils in overtime and both Brianna Chamberlain and Erin Carney hit two and Swick scored one, which gave their squad enough to hang on for the 45-43 win.

On Friday night, Grosse Ile met Huron at 6 p.m. at Airport in a battle for the district title.
