Cabrini didn’t shoot well in the first half of Sunday’s Catholic High School League C-D final, but it stayed close by taking care of the ball.

A string of giveaways in the third quarter, however, doomed the Monarchs.

Cabrini had eight turnovers in the period and Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes used a 13-0 run to take control and win 66-48 at the University of Detroit Mercy’s Calihan Hall.

The Monarchs trailed 28-20 at intermission but the Lakers pushed their lead into double digits before the third quarter was three minutes old. Cabrini turned the ball over five times during the decisive run.

“That’s been our Achilles’ heel all season,” Coach Gerry Klos said. “If we’re turning the ball over like that, it’s pretty hard to win.”

The teams each had four giveaways in the first half but Lakes was much sharper when the teams returned to the court after the half.

“That’s a very good team,” Klos said of the Lakers. “They’ve got some good shooters and they really play well together.

“This is a good game for us right before districts. Playing a team like that gives us something to strive for.”

Senior Robert DeBlander had 15 points and David Szczesny added 14 for Cabrini (8-11), which also got 10 from Curtis Krawczyk.

The Lakers’ Nick Robak led all scorers with 24 points. Adam and Andrew Kline each added 12.
