In a Huron League battle last month, Grosse Ile took on Flat Rock and won by only five points.

The second meeting for the Rams (6-10, 5-8) and Red Devils (9-8, 8-5 Huron) went much different, however.

On Wednesday night, Grosse Ile welcomed in Flat Rock and came away an easy 60-40 victory, even without leading scorer Danny McCarty (20.2 ppg) this time.

Devils Coach Bryan Friel said that getting a big victory, despite the absence of his senior co-captain, is a big confidence booster for his team.

“We hadn’t won a game without Danny McCarty, so winning a game without him is obviously going to be a positive for all of us,” Friel said.

The Devils jumped out to an 18-7 advantage after the first quarter and leading the way were Tommy Daly and Danny Masserant, who both scored six points.

For the night, Daly finished with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while teammate Tyler Moores had a game-high 17 points and four boards. Coming away with eight points were Masserant, Justin Moores and Derek Judd.

Daly, who is the squad’s other co-captain, said he was happy to see several teammates come through with important contributions.

“We worked really well as a team,” the senior said. “It was good for our other players to step up and they came up really big in this game.”

In the second quarter, the Rams were able to mount a comeback attempt and pulled to within three, thanks to 3-pointers from Parker Neal and TeDarius Laidler and a pair of Kevin Fritz free throws.

Fritz, who finished with a team-high 10 points, also converted a three-point play late in the quarter after being fouled and made it a 29-24 game at the break.

To open the second half, Justin Moores knocked down a pair of triples for the Devils and they never looked back.

Grosse Ile held Flat Rock to just five third-quarter points, while Tyler Moores scored five and Daly netted four for the hosts, who took a 45-29 lead into the final eight minutes.

Flat Rock struggled to score again in the last quarter, while the Devils got four points from Judd, as well as three from Daly, Tyler Moores and Wyatt Garner and a pair from Masserant.

Rams’ Coach Dave Bogataj said he was completely disappointed with the play of his squad Wednesday night.

“We were awful on offense, awful on defense, awful with the effort; didn’t even show up tonight,” Bogataj said. “There’s got to be an effort, we’ve got to show a little bit of pride. We had no pride in our game tonight.”

For both Grosse Ile and Flat Rock, Huron League play wraps up Friday night, as the Devils will welcome in Huron and the Rams are scheduled for a trip to Airport.
