After two double-digit losses last week, it looked like Allen Park might struggle through the final stretch of the Downriver League season.

Instead, the Jaguars (11-7, 9-6 DRL) did the exact opposite Tuesday night at Carlson.

Allen Park handed the host Marauders (9-8, 8-6 DRL) a 66-54 defeat, bouncing back from last week’s 11-point loss to Melvindale and 31-point manhandling against Kennedy.

Led by 16 points from Antonio Reviere, the Jags held a big lead through the middle quarters were able to fend off a late surge by Carlson.

“This is a step forward,” said Allen Park Coach Jim Victor. “If we can play like this, I think we can be very competitive in our district and to finish out this regular season.”

To start, the Jags were able to grab a 7-2 first-quarter lead, but the Marauders hit back and were down only 15-14 after eight minutes of play.

Helping Carlson close the gap were five first-quarter points from Torrey Gray and two free throws by Jarrett Atkinson. For the night, Atkinson led all scorers with 18 points, while Gray had five and led his team in rebounds with six.

The home team kicked off the second quarter with a basket by Prince Ideozu to take a narrow 16-15 lead, but it was all Allen Park from there.

Reviere scored six second-quarter points, teammate Adam McJunkin netted eight and both Jarret Shinault and Jared Donigan hit triples en route to a 41-20 advantage at the half.

Shinault came away with 12 points for the night and McJunkin had 10, as well as six rebounds.

Out of the break, Atkinson caught fire for Carlson and scored 12 points, but the Jags got baskets from six different players to help lift their squad to a 57-39 lead after three quarters.

Guided by third-quarter five points from Reviere, it marked the third consecutive quarter in which a half dozen of the Allen Parkers contributed.

“I feel about us, we’re a good team, we’re a really good team,” Reviere said. “When we play together like we did today, I don’t know if there’s much that can stop us.”

Carlson’s Jared Henson scored all eight of his points in the fourth quarter to lead a late comeback effort for his team. Helped out by four points from Atkinson and a 3-pointer by teammate Aaron Herman, the deficit was cut to single digits at 61-52 with more than three minutes still left.

Allen Park, however, was able to add five more points, including two key free throws from Richard Gamble, and held the Jags to just two points to close out the game. Gamble came away with eight total points for the evening and led his team in rebounds with seven.

The regular season wraps up next week for both teams and the MHSAA state playoffs kick off March 3. Allen Park will go into the tournament playing in Division 1, District 16 at Lincoln Park and Carlson will start its postseason run in Division 1, District 14 at Roosevelt.
