BOYS' BASKETBALL: Huron League roundup (PHOTO)

Grosse Ile wrapped up a long stretch of consecutive away games last week, but unfortunately for the Red Devils (8-8, 7-5 Huron League) neither their last road host nor their first visitor back home was very gracious.

In its seventh straight contest off of the island, Grosse Ile fell 58-55 to Airport last Tuesday and three nights later, back at home, first-place Milan hammered the Devils 78-42.

At Airport, the locals were down 14-7 after the first quarter, but charged back in the second and at the half the game was tied 26-26.

After the intermission, the Jets narrowly outscored the Devils, 15-14, and took a 41-40 advantage into the last eight minutes.

In the final quarter, the hosts bested Grosse Ile again and sent the scarlet and gray squad home with the 58-55 defeat.

For the night, the Devils had a total of four players hit double figures against Airport.

Justin Moores scored a team-high 14 points for Grosse Ile, Derek Judd came away with 12, Tommy Daly finished with 11 and Tyler Moores put up 10.

On Friday night, Milan grabbed a 24-11 lead after the first quarter and was up 33-18 at the half. The domination continued in the second half and the Big Reds rolled to the 36-point win against the Devils.

Tyler Moores led Grosse Ile with 17 points and Neil Smorch had 10 for the night.

Next on the Devilsí schedule is a home game tonight against Flat Rock and on Friday the team is set to welcome in Huron.

It was a tough week in New Boston, as Huron hosted both of its league games last week, but came away with a pair of defeats.

Monroe SMCC came to visit on Tuesday and crushed the Chiefs (4-12, 4-7 Huron League) 46-24 and three nights later Airport left with a 50-43 victory.

Against SMCC, Zach Schlarb had a team-high in both points (eight) and rebounds (five), while Chris Schultz finished with six points and Cameron Cox had four rebounds.

In the battle with Airport, Tyler Olson scored 15 points, Austin Bell had 12 and Justin Carey led in rebounds with five.

Last night Huron was scheduled to travel to Riverview and on Friday was set for a trip to Grosse Ile.

In two games last week, Riverview fell just short of earning its second victory of the 2013-14 campaign.

The Pirates (1-14, 1-10 Huron League) were dropped 48-44 on Tuesday at Monroe Jefferson and lost 59-53 Friday night against Flat Rock.

Nolan Glime led Riverview in both games, as he scored 20 against Jefferson and 22 against the Rams (6-10, 5-7 Huron League).

Also, three nights before beating Riverview, Flat Rock was crushed 71-48 by Milan.

The Bucs were scheduled to play last night at home against Huron and were set to be back home Friday to face SMCC.

For the Rams, the squad has a game scheduled for tonight at Grosse Ile and on Friday is looking at a trip to Airport.
