The door to the Michigan High School Competitive Cheerleading regionals opened Saturday and when it slammed shut hours later, seven Downriver teams found themselves heading to the MHSAA’s next round.

The top four teams in each of the state’s district competitions qualify for regionals and Division 1 teams Anderson, Roosevelt and Woodhaven; Division 2 teams Carlson, Allen Park and Trenton; and Division 3 Grosse Ile made the grade.

Anderson, the defending Division 1 state champ, Carlson, the three-time defending Division 2 state champ, and Grosse Ile were all district champions.

Anderson won the district hosted by Roosevelt, scoring 779.46 points and easily topping runner-up Bedford, host Roosevelt and Woodhaven.

Anderson’s district score was the highest of any Downriver team Saturday.

Carlson won the D2 title at Allen Park, scoring 778.32 to beat Dearborn Divine Child (774.68) and host Allen Park (771.14). Trenton was fourth.

At the Division 3 district hosted by Flat Rock, Grosse Ile, the Huron League champion, walked away with top honors with a score of 737.06. Onsted was second, Brooklyn Columbia Central third and Monroe Jefferson fourth. Downriver teams Summit Academy, Flat Rock and Cabrini competed but each failed to crack the top four and saw their seasons end.

Regionals are now set for Saturday.

Anderson, Roosevelt and Woodhaven will be in the regional hosted by Troy Athens. Carlson, Allen Park and Trenton will be in Ortonville at Brandon High School and Grosse Ile will compete in the D3 regional hosted by Oxford.

The state finals are at the Deltaplex in Grand Rapids Feb. 28 and March 1.
