With the host Titans down 33-30, Bobby Hodge squared off with Livonia Franklin’s Adam Ross at 125 pounds.
Unfortunately for the locals, it was Ross who came out on top and his Patriots who got to hoist the regional championship trophy, as they earned a 39-30 win in the final, as well as the trip to Battle Creek.
To help set up the close finish down the stretch, Anderson’s Cody Tis (HWT) and Dylan Hoagland (103) recorded back-to-back pins and Donte Rivera-Garcia (112) picked up a victory, which gave their squad a narrow 30-28 advantage before it dropped the last two matches.
“We knew we needed one swing match somewhere between the 14 weight classes, we just didn’t get it,” said Titans Coach Jerry Frazier.
“We were one match away from making it this time and hopefully the kids will refocus and come back next year with a sense of urgency to never want to feel like this again.”
Also picking up wins in the final for Anderson were Logan Parks (140), Jacob Balogh (145) and Chris Pauly (215).
To advance, the Titans crushed Fordson 58-18 in the semifinal and the Patriots took down Birmingham Seaholm 53-24.
The Tractors voided multiple times in the loss and got their only wins from Sameer Meheidli (125), Hassan Ajami (130) and Mo Bazzi (HWT).
“We did what we had to do,” said Fordson Assistant Coach Abe Beydoun. “We sacrificed some weight (classes) to try to get wins at other weights and ended up voiding five weight classes. Part of that was injury, the other part was strategy. It didn’t work out the way we liked.”
Anderson victories in the semifinals belonged to Hoagland (103), Rivera-Garcia (112), Bridge (119), Mike Molloy (135), Alec Labadie (140), Parks (145), Jacob Balogh (152), Cody Stanley (160), Nico Romero (171), Chris Pauly (189) and Cody Tis (215).
This Saturday, seven Anderson wrestlers will compete in Woodhaven at Division 1 individual regionals. Battling for a trip to states will be Hoagland, Rivera-Garcia, Parks, Balogh, Stanley, Pauly and Tis.
Anderson will return most of its team next year, as the squad will only graduate two wrestlers.
