BOYS' BASKETBALL: Mixed Monroe results for Devils

In two trips south to Monroe last week, Grosse Ile came away with two completely different outcomes.

On Tuesday the third-place Red Devils (8-6, 7-3 Huron League) missed a chance to take down second-place Monroe SMCC and fell 71-57. Three nights later, at Jefferson, Grosse Ile crushed the Bears 67-40.

In the battle with SMCC, Grosse Ile trailed only 16-14 after the first quarter, but was outscored 16-4 in the next eight minutes and went into the half down 32-18.

The Falcons held a 14-point lead after three quarters, up 49-35, and once again kept pace in the final quarter to knock off the Devils by 14.

Danny McCarty led Grosse Ile with 19 points, while Justin Moores added 14 and Tommy Daly finished with 11.

At Jefferson, the locals led 22-4 after the first quarter and were up 33-16 at the half. Helping Grosse Ile open up the big lead were four first-quarter 3-pointers.

In the final 16 minutes, the domination continued, as the Devils outscored the Bears 34-24 and cruised to the easy 67-40 win.

McCarty led the way with 19 points, while Tyler Moores scored 12 and both Tommy Daly and Eric Smorch came away with 10.

Last night Grosse Ile was scheduled to be at Airport and finish up its stretch of seven consecutive road games. On Friday night, the Devils are set to be home for the first time in a month, but will have their hands full with first-place Milan.

Huron hangs on against Flat Rock

Huron let a 16-point lead slip away last Friday night at home, but

bounced back in the fourth quarter to take out Flat Rock 58-49.

The first quarter saw both teams struggle with shooting, but the Chiefs (4-10, 4-5 Huron League) slowly built a lead and a late Cameron Cox layup put Huron up 15-5 going into the second. For the night, Cox finished with a double-double, as he scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

A 7-1 Chiefsí run to open the second put the Rams (5-9, 4-6 Huron) in a 16-point hole, but they werenít ready to give up.

Xavier Mozhan-Kennedy hit a pair of 3-pointers for Flat Rock and teammate TeDarius Laidler added one to close the gap and after a goaltending call on Huron at the buzzer the hosts led only 26-20 at the half.

In the third quarter, Flat Rockís Kevin Fritz hit two triples and Parker Neal scored eight points, which helped the visitors pull into a 41-41 tie going into the final eight minutes.

Unfortunately for the Rams, their shooting went stone cold in the fourth quarter and they missed 18 shots. For the Chiefs, Tyler Olson scored six of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, including the first five by either team, to help give Huron the cushion it would ultimately need to come away victorious.

Zachary Schlarb also added eight points for the Chiefs in the winning effort and he grabbed seven rebounds

The Rams had two players reach double figures, as Fritz scored 11 and Laidler put up 10 in the losing effort.

Both squads were also in action three nights earlier.

Flat Rock knocked off visiting Jefferson 75-53, as it got 22 points from Mayberry and 17 from Neal.

Huron was hammered 66-21 at Milan, with Austin Bell netting eight points and Olson getting six.

This week Huron was scheduled for two home games, beginning yesterday against first-place Milan and then Friday against Airport.

Riverview

What has been a tough season for Riverview continued last week with two more defeats for the Pirates (1-12, 1-8 Huron).

On Tuesday night, Riverview was handed a 50-39 defeat by visiting Airport, getting 14 points from Nolan Glime and 11 from Brad Skidmore. Three nights later, the Bucs were crushed 81-31 by Milan.

Last night, Riverview was scheduled for a trip to Jefferson and Friday was set to visit Flat Rock.
