Like the march of time, the Carlson competitive cheerleading team continued to roll along last week, collecting more championship trophies and it went.

Last Thursday the Marauders won the Downriver League championship, knocking off defending league and Division 1 state champ Anderson along the way.

The Titans posted better second- and third-round scores than the Marauders, but Carlson’s big 232.5 first round provided enough cushion for the victory.

Carlson finished with 771.94 points and Anderson had 767.16. Allen Park was third (751.89), Roosevelt was fourth (719.72), Woodhaven was fifth (703.66_, Trenton was sixth and Lincoln Park seventh.

On Saturday the Marauders were at Ortonville High School for the Brandon Invitational where they won again, easily taking the Division 2 crown with 783.84 points.

The bigger news was that the Carlson score was the highest among any of the competitors, topping even that of state-ranked Division 1 teams Lake Orion (No. 2) and Rochester Stoney Creek (No.4).

While the Marauders were in Brandon on Saturday, many Downriver teams were at the huge Cheer Deltaplex Tournament on the west side of the state.

No local teams won titles there but several did come back with some hardware.

Grosse Ile finished third in Division 3 behind state-ranked rivals Notre Dame Prep and Comstock Park, while Anderson was fourth in Division 1 and Trenton was fourth in Division 2.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association district tournament is next for the state’s cheerleading teams.
