Wednesday was a day of highs and lows for Woodhaven 171 pounder Justin Patton.

In a Division 1 team district semifinal win over Monroe the senior picked up his 100th career victory, about an hour later he suffered the agony of a close loss in the waning seconds of his match against Bedford.

Patton was matched against Dallas Winkleman from Bedford and the Warriors trailing 29-15 with four matches to wrestle after his. It was the lynch-pin match of a potential upset over the state-ranked Kicking Mules. The team needed a win in the match.

Patton quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead with an early takedown, and lead 6-4 after the first period. Patton got a reversal to open the second period, but Winkleman charged back with an escape and a late takedown to close the gap to 8-7 heading into the final period.

Winkleman tied it up seconds into the third with an escape, setting up a dead heat with about 1:45 to wrestle. A flurry of twists and turns resulting in no points made the next minute exciting for the fans, then in the final minute Patton got a takedown near the edge of the mat to go up 10-8.

Winkleman escaped quickly off a restart and with under 10 seconds to go scored a takedown and held on for the 11-10 victory that all but clinched the crown for Bedford.

Patton laid on the matt for about 20 seconds after the loss.

“He’s a tough kid,” Warriors Coach Rudy Weirch said. “This will only motivate him more for (individual districts). He’ll be fuming the whole ride home, but he’ll bounce back stronger on Saturday.”

Bedford won by a final of 41-25. The final score included two voids from the Warriors and losses in two of the key matches.

“We lost the crucial matches,” Weirich said. “We needed to win at 125, 160 and 171.”

Devin McClain (125) was up 2-0 and dominating the match when he was taken down straight to his back and pinned at the 2:25 mark.

Jared Ammons (160) picked up a close 9-7 decision and Patton took the tough loss at 171.

Other match winners for the Warriors were Xavier Graham (103), Hunter Grasso (119), Austin Avison (140) and Derek Hillman (189). Graham, Grasso and Avison each had falls. Hillman won a 14-6 major decision.

Woodhaven routed Monroe 48-25 in the semifinals. Match winners included falls from Robert Duncan (152), and Patton (189) and decisions from Noah Anderson (130) and Jared Ammons (152). Graham (112), Grasso (119) Devin McClain (125), Hillman (215) and Ricky Christian (285) all received voids. Including a void from Woodhaven at 103, the meet had forfeits at six of the 14 weight classes.

Bedford walked in the finals with a 56-12 victory over Ypsilanti Lincoln in the other semifinal.
