In a fast, but physical game between the Roosevelt Bears and the Allen Park Jaguars on Thursday evening game started slow, but the pace picked up as the minutes went on.

Both teams played physically and emotionally, but it was the Jaguars who took control in the second quarter and finished with the 38-26 win in the Jags’ auxiliary gym.

“When we play Wyandotte, they’re going to come play hard against us. We had a rough week as far as two losses, and yesterday we didn’t practice,” said Allen Park Coach Chuck Perez. “We usually don’t play in that gym, so there was a lot of things going on.”

Points were rare in the first quarter, until the Jaguars went on a six point run to end the quarter up 11-7. The Bears hit a field goal with less than 40 seconds left to stop the run.

It seemed the momentum was switching as the second quarter started, as the Bears picked up another four points to tie the game at 11. But once senior guard Casey Bowdell hit a triple, the Jaguars didn’t look back. Following Bowdell’s triple, the Jaguars scored 10 straight points and held the Bears to just four points in the quarter. Allen Park ended the first half up, 24-11.

That momentum carried over into the third quarter as the Jaguars pounced on their opportunities, especially the Bears turnovers.

Things got physical as the game went on and in the end, the Jaguar defense stood tall again, late in the game.

Full-court press really helped the Jags. Right off the bat, the press seemed to fluster the Bears offense, and as the game went on, had some trouble inbounding the ball. The Bears didn’t give up though, and looked for ways to find the basket.

“We were begging our girls to throw it down to the post, and then we get opportunities in the post, and we’re not catching the ball, we’re not being fundamentally sound with the basketball,” said Roosevelt Coach Ron Adkins.

“When we play that fast, we’re not at our best. I thought we played hard defense, and we scrapped that’s for sure. They scrapped, they played hard. The ball’s gotta go in the basket.”

Bowdell led with a game high 17 points and seven rebounds. No other player was in double figures. Teammate, and fellow senior guard Hailey Lazarek added eight points, while sophomore Aly Kubik had four points and four boards.

The Bears were led by Tierney Runions. Senior forward Nicole Ostrowitz had three points and five boards, and sophomore guard Alea Kainz had four points and four boards.

Next up for the Bears is Lincoln Park on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7:00pm, followed by a home match against Truman two nights later at the same time.

As for the Jaguars, they have three games in a row next week, starting with Melvindale on Tuesday at 7:00pm, followed by a game against New Boston Huron on Wednesday. They finish off the week at Taylor Kennedy on Thursday at 7:00pm.
