The Riverview wrestling team celebrated Parents/Senior night on Wednesday with an easy 75-6 win over a Grosse Ile team short on wrestlers.

In the Pirates’ final Huron League dual of the season, the home team won 13 of the 14 weights against the Red Devils.

On Saturday, Riverview went 1-4 at the Saline Super Duals, coming up on the short end of a couple close matches.

“However, we did have some excellent individual performances, which is very positive considering the competition,” said Riverview Coach Jason Dodd. “We knew some of the best programs would be there and that's what you look for at this time of the season.”

Riverview lost to Portage Northern (34-27), Saline (43-28), Frazer (34-45) and Hastings (32-45). While the team did wrestle well, the Bucs had to void 189 due to sickness and that sealed their fate in a few duals.

Riverview’s win came against host Saline B, 65-12.

Hartland took first overall, followed by Saline, Anderson and Portage Northern.

Individually, the Pirates had some major victories. Going 5-0 on the day were sophomore captain Brandon Garcia (145 pounds) and senior captain Victor Korkis (152). Senior Kyle Terrell (285) was 4-0 and sophomore Michael Wright (103) was 4-1.

Garcia (145) defeated sixth-ranked Jacob Heaps of Portage Northern 2-0 and then followed that up by bumping up to 152 and defeating No. 4 ranked Jason Slaughter from Hastings 7-0.

Kyle Terrell (285) also recorded a first-period pin against Nate Pewoski of Hastings, who was listed as honorable mention in the state rankings.

“It was a really good day,” Dodd said. “Also, we had some classic battles that we just came out on the wrong side of. But regardless of the results, those matches were still very beneficial so late in the season. As the saying going, ‘iron sharpens iron.’”

The Pirates are at Monroe Jefferson for the Huron League championships.

Huron

Huron won twice on Wednesday, knocking off Roosevelt 55-17 and then beating host Anderson 36-30.

Anderson also knocked off Roosevelt 57-15 at the event.

DJ Christie, Jon Wellman, Logan Ritchie (40-0 on the season), Justin Collins, Deion Copley and Jeff Henderson were all 2-0 for the Chiefs.

On Saturday, the Chiefs went 1-4 at the Dundee in the Witt Challenge.

Huron lost to New Lothrop, Brighton, Bedford and Dundee. The Chiefs beat Airport 57-12 in its final action of the day.

Logan Ritchie (160) and Jon Wellman (125- 130) had 5-0 days for the Chiefs. Deion Copley (215) and Jeff Henderson (285) were 4- 1.

Huron (21-7 on the season) was at Monroe-Jefferson for the league meet where the Chiefs went for a fourth straight Huron League championship and 14th overall.

Flat Rock

Flat Rock lost to Huron 62-16 and to Monroe Jefferson 67-9 on Thursday in a makeup hosted by the Rams.

The only double winner for Flat Rock was freshman Joey Talerico at 103 pounds. “The kids wrestled hard and didn't give up all night,” said Flat Rock assistant Coach John Cecil.

On Saturday, Flat Rock wrestled at the 16-team Leslie Tournament and placed ninth. Out of the 13 wrestlers the Rams took, five placed.

Talerico (103) took fifth, Nick Stedman (145) was third, Jacob Salter (152) was third, Eric Antolak (215) was fifth and Jeff Jones (285) was fifth.

“The kids wrestled really well,” Cecil said.
