The biggest high school hockey event of the season – outside of the MHSAA state playoffs – hits the ice this week at Trenton’s Kennedy Arena.

The Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Showcase, which brings together many of the best teams from Michigan, Canada and surrounding states, begins Wednesday with “MIHL Night” and continues Thursday, Friday and Saturday on all three of the Kennedy’s ice surfaces.

Although there are far fewer local teams competing in the Showcase than in past years, this is still an opportunity for area fans to get out and see some of the best players in the state as they play right in our own backyard.

The Michigan High School Hockey Hub top ranked teams in each division – Novi Detroit Catholic Central, Trenton and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook – will all be there and the field is loaded with other highly regarded squads.

Eight of the top 10-ranked D1 teams will play, four of the top 10-ranked D2 teams will play and eight of the top-10 D3 teams will be on hand, along with Indiana’s Culver Academy, Upper Canada College and Toledo St. John’s.

Wednesday is “MIHL Night” when all 10 of the host conference’s schools will be in action. Games begin at 4 p.m. and will be played on both the Main and Teifer rinks. Roosevelt will play Grosse Pointe North on the Main rink at 4 p.m. and Trenton will play Port Huron Northern on the Main rink at 8.

Other games will pit Brother Rice against U-of-D Jesuit (5:20 p.m.), Cranbrook against Catholic Central (6 p.m.) and Orchard Lake St. Mary against De LaSalle (7:20).

The Showcase gets underway in earnest on Thursday with six games beginning at 5:20 p.m. There will be 18 games beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday and 18 games beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Tickets are $6 a day for adults and $5 for seniors and students. Weekend passes are available for $10 and $8. No passes will be accepted any day of the Showcase, including “MIHL Night. Members of the military are free.

Parking in the small Kennedy Arena lot is $3, but free shuttles will run from the high school and surrounding parking lots.
